There are a couple
of reasons why I decided to take part in the midnight walk - I'll try to
keep this brief.
Firstly I am a cancer nurse specialist, currently caring for
those with urology cancers although I have worked within cancer care for
the past 11 years. I am fully
aware of the precious part hospices play in the care of those affected by
cancer - be this support in coping with their disease and it's treatment
or end of life care.
But I specifically chose to fundraise this way, with a 13
mile walk, for more personal reasons - a few years ago I inured my back
(the wear and tear finally tooks its toll) and spemt four months barely
able to walk - any exercise was difficult and painful and eventually even
though I returned to work I had to change job as I physically couldn't
cope with the demands of ward work. As
exercise (even walking) was painful after a short time you can understand
that I did less and piled weight on - more weight, worse back pain and my
level of fitness plummeted. Last
year I realised I could no longer continue as I was - and pain or no pain
I had to do something about my fitness, or rather lack of.
I joined a local gym and so far have lost over 1 1/2 stones - but
more imporantly I feel fitter than ever.
I see this walk as a challenge for me - but it will mean so
much for me to complete this - not only will it reflect the achievement of
my desire to improve my fitness levels - but also prove to me that pain or
no pain I can achieve what once seemed impossible!
